Rita Smith, AIA. Rita Smith grew up in Virginia Beach attending Kellam High School and the University of Virginia. Her studies in architecture took her to Boston where she lived for 20 years. After work projects for 12 years out west in San Diego and Phoenix, she relocated back to her Virginia Beach family in 2018. Her architecture work has provided opportunities to work with various communities across the country, particularly providing relief from airport noise for residents, schools and worship communities. One of her professional pursuits was Catholic Liturgical Design. Starting in 2013, her fruitful work in several design and construction roles at Our Lady of the Angels Church at the Franciscan Renewal Center in Arizona resulted in a rededication of interest in artistic pursuits. Rita has taken workshops and classes in Boston, San Diego, New Mexico and Arizona in printmaking, art quilting, oil painting and watercolor. Watercolor has been the most persistent art form throughout the years. While her current work is very technical, directing the production of construction specifications for a national water/wastewater engineering company, her current free-time focus is learning to paint watercolor portraits.
