Al Phillips, Watercolor Society of Alabama (WSA)
Al Phillips, an Alabama native, is a WSA signature member and an associate member of the VA Watercolor Society, AWS, and NWS. Al is a graduate of Samford University and also studied at the CA College of the Arts and the University of AL, Birmingham. His style of painting ranges from near photorealism to impressionist representational. He is an avid admirer of the masters of the medium including Homer, Sargent, Hopper, and A. Wyeth. However, he finds the California style paintings of the 1900’s filled with light especially appealing. Al has been juried into numerous prestigious exhibitions, including the WSA national online exhibition. In 2012 he was recognized with a Merit Award, and in 2014 he received a Certificate of Recognition. Al is also a winner of the Gold Key Awards in cartooning and poster design. For several years Al painted under the tutelage of Chuck Long. He has also participated in several watercolor workshops. His professional experience includes technical illustrator, airbrush artist, cartoonist in the aircraft and aerospace industry, staff artist for a Christian denominational publisher, illustrator for a publisher of interdenominational Christian school curriculum, and consultant for a county elementary art program where he developed a curriculum guide for teachers. |
