Joelle Douthit - Creating is a core calling for me, and I chose the term “create” deliberately: I rotate through various media – primarily watercolors, oil painting, and printmaking – because each needs a different mindset, a different approach in the execution. I love watercolors for their ability to layer color, build up different textures and capture light. I particularly enjoy how different pigments move through the medium of water – mesmerizing in its own right.
I love the unnoticed, ordinary things that are absolutely beautiful but are generally missed in our busyness. In natural forms – a favorite subject! – it’s the veining on a petal, the grain of wood, the shape of a leaf that carries its own drama, light passing through membrane, or flowers we call weeds. In living things, it’s the flow of fur, the light caught by the eye, or everyday moments we move through without thought – cooking, riding the metro, catching lunch with family. In landscapes, it’s the simple moments: the still quietness of snow, of twilight, of sunset. In still lives, again, it’s the ordinary things: the favorite teacup or bottle of liquor, the luminescence of farm eggs, the simple design of a woven basket. I love the quiet, the stillness, the glory hidden in the ordinary. I grew up in Hampton Roads and I hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Old Dominion University. I currently teach a private homeschool general arts class, as well as teach printmaking in the local arts community. Window Cat
